This thread presents the structure of the Haxball European Competitions in their first season, starting in September 2011. Everything is obviously still up for debate, but this is the probable layout of the competitions.
This scenario assumes that 8 leagues will participate in the first season of Haxball European Competitions. Eight is the minimum number of leagues we need to be able to run HEC's first season. We cannot do this without your help, so please spread the word!
Each league will send 5 teams to HEC: two to Haxball Champions League and three to Haxball Europa League.
HAXBALL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
16 teams from 8 leagues will participate in the first season of Haxball Champions League. A random draw will put these teams in 4 groups of 4 teams each. Teams from the same league cannot be placed in the same group. In the group stage each team will play each team in its group twice (once at home and once away). The exact fixtures will be set after the draw. Two best teams in each group will be promoted to the Haxball Champions League quarterfinal and the third-placed team in each group will play in the 1/8-final of the Haxball Europa League.
In the Haxball CL quarter-final the 1st placed teams will play against randomly chosen 2nd placed teams. In the quarterfinal teams from the same country cannot be drawn against each other. The quarterfinal and semifinal will be played as a two-match fixture, featuring each team once as the host and once as the visitor. The away goals rule will be applied. The final will be played as a single match hosted on a neutral ground.
HAXBALL EUROPA LEAGUE
24 teams from 8 leagues will participate in the first season of Haxball Champions League. A random draw will put these teams in 6 groups of 4 teams each. Teams from the same league cannot be placed in the same group. In the group stage each team will play each team in its group twice (once at home and once away). The exact fixtures will be set after the draw. Two best teams in each group will be promoted to the Haxball Europa League 1/8-final, where they will be joined by third-placed teams from the Haxball Champions League round robin.
In the Haxball EL 1/8-final the best 1st placed teams and the 3rd placed teams from Haxball CL will play against randomly chosen remaining 1st placed teams and 2nd placed teams. In the 1/8-final teams from the same country cannot be drawn against each other, this limitation does not exist in the further rounds. The 1/8-final, quarterfinal and semifinal will be played as a two-match fixture, featuring each team once as the host and once as the visitor. The away goals rule will be applied. The final will be played as a single match hosted on a neutral ground.
